lato 189 it is

Lopputulosta voikin "ihailla"/kauhistella blogistani, johon olitkin jo löytänyt! ;)

    1. Kiitos Bella!

Teidän blogi on tosi kiva. Vierailen siellä varmasti säännöllisesti.

  2. Moi. Anteeksi, puhutko englantia? My husband and I are thinking of building a Lato as well. We love the 189 floor plan and don't want to change much about it. One question... what about air flow? We've contacted Kannustalo and they say that all of the windows in the house are fixed. So you can't open a bedroom window to catch the breeze on a cool summer evening. What do you think about that? Kiitos. - Siobhán

    1. Hello Siobhán!

That's a good point! We haven't actually thought about it. I'm pretty sure it's possible to change the windows to ones you can actually open, but we'll check that with our Kannustalo representative. That would change the way Lato looks though, I guess. Let you know more when we know more. Thanks for pointing that out!

    2. You're welcome, Är. Are you planning to install air conditioning? If so, you might not need the windows to open. Still, fresh air is nice. I was thinking an operable transom above some windows might work -- in the upstairs bedrooms in particular. The transoms would look like the transoms above the glass doors downstairs. But I'd want to leave the windows in the main living area as is. They're lovely. I look forward to reading more about your building progress -- with the help of my Finnish husband. ;-) Regards, Siobhán

    3. Yes, we'll be having air conditioning, but you are right that fresh air is nice. I like to get lots of fresh air in every now and then. The transoms are a good idea for the bedroom windows. They won't disturb the look too much. In the living room you can anyway open the door, so it's not important to be able to open the windows.

Thanks for your input again Siobhán! :)

    4. Hello again Siobhán! I hope you still find this comment. I'm sorry to reply so late. I've completely forgotten... I think the pregnancy somehow affected my brain. ;)

We checked the window issue with our Kannustalo representative and the bedroom windows can be opened. When looking at the drawing/layout they also show that the bedroom windows can be opened. According to the layout some of the downstairs windows cannot be opened.

Have you already decided what kind of house you are building?

    5. Hi Är. When reading your current post (26.10), I just saw the note about your response here. Sorry I missed it before. Pekka and I are definitely building the Lato 189. Thank you for the info about the windows upstairs opening. We can't leave the doors downstairs open for airflow because we have a dog and she'd be outside like a shot. That's something I've always loved about Dutch doors. You can let fresh air circulate but keep children and dogs inside. I wonder if we can get those here? In case you're not familiar with Dutch doors, here's some pics: http://www.mydesignchic.com/2011/04/dutch-doors.html
A change to our floorplan... we're considering moving the study (TH) upstairs so that we can have a larger kitchen/living room area. We're also switching the position of the living room and dining room. We met with a Kannustalo architect last week and should see new drawings early next week. We mentioned the fireplace issue to her too. We'll see if she has another solution for us. Congrats on your baby! And don't forget your camera when your house arrives next month! ;-) - Siobhán

    6. Thanks Siobhán!

I've never seen Dutch doors. They do seem convenient for home with pets or small children! I have no idea if you can get them from Finland, but for sure someone can make one.

While playing with the fireplace issue I also started to think if we should swop the dining room and living room around. We really should have done all the planning before hand and not now when the house is arriving in a few days...

Would you also be changing the entrance as well if you move the study upstairs in order to have a larger kitchen/living room?

    7. Är, I think I may get a Dutch door for the Lato. They're very welcoming as well as practical. And you see them all the time on a farm in the States... if not on the house, then in the stables! The horses love to look out. ;-)

We're switching the living and dining rooms to have the liv rm more cozy under the lower ceiling. Also, as someone walks up to the house with all those windows, we don't want them to immediately see us lazing around on the sofa in our pajamas on a late Saturday morning. ;-) The only problem is that the back of the house also has the kitchen which cuts into the available space. Hence our moving the TH upstairs.

We told the architect that we like the open feeling of the original Lato 189 entrance and we don't want the front door on the end of the house. I suspect she'll keep it somewhere near its original position. I can let you know when I see the new plans.

As for rethinking your house plan now, don't be too concerned. It's totally normal. Like waiting for a baby to arrive. So much to think about! The Lato 189 is a great plan as is, so I'm sure you'll find the right place for everything once you can see the spaces in three-dimensions as opposed to just on paper.

    8. Yes, please keep me posted on your plans. :) It'll be interesting to see how your floor plan looks like when it's ready. And of course it would be great to see your interior choices like kitchen, floor etc. Maybe you'll start a blog too?!

  3. Heippa!
